Diving the Great Barrier Reef?

My question is this: Is it worth getting our diving cert. if we're going to the GBR, or would it be just as good to snorkel? It will be a once in a lifetime trip for us.

Also, how safe is scuba diving?

It depends which part of the reef you are going to. It's huge! It alsoo depends if you aregoing too continue diving elsewhere. If you're only going to do it for the GBR and nothing else, then, it's probably not worth the expense. If it was me, I'd be doing it anyway.

As to safety, provided all the rules are followed and you ae properly taught and diving with other suitably qualified divers, then it's as safe as most other sports.
