where can i get a free scuba diving certification online?

yeah i was just wondering where i can take online scuba diving courses for free. I looked everywhere and found ssi, but my local diving center isn`t registered with ssi. can anybody help me with this please?


Free Scuba Diving Certification does not exist unless you know someone that is willing to do that for you. Regardless the Scuba Diving Certification organization like SSI, PADI, NAUI, has fees to register you as a Certified Scuba Diver.

Now doing it online - you may find some organization out there offer the classroom portion of the Scuba Diving Certification online. But you have to learn and demonstrate numerous skills at on land, in swimming pool, and in open water - lie the ocean, lake, quarry (deep water). This cannot be done online.

My advice to you would be to do the whole thing with a scuba instructor in person. This process takes multiple days. You will have lots of questions as you start this process.

While Aruba may be better known for its beaches and casinos, it is also a good destination for the scuba diver. In fact, Aruba was voted the second best wreck diving in the Caribbean by Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine in 2006. So if you like wrecks, you may want to consider a trip to Aruba. Plus, you can always check out those casinos and beaches in-between dives!

Location

Aruba is situated 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela and is about a 2 1/2 hour flight from Miami. Given its popularity with tourists, this is an easy island to get to with many direct flights from the US.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, all located off the coast of Venezuela, form the ABC islands. Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles in 1986 and is now a separate, autonomous member of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Geography

Aruba is easy to explore at just 20 miles long and 6 miles wide. Like it's sister island, Curacao, its landscape is dotted with divi divi trees and cacti.

The highest elevation on the island is Yamanota Hill at just 617 feet. It's located near the center of the island and you can visit it by car. The northeast coast is rugged with cliffs and pounding surf.

The real draw here is the southwest coast and its beautiful beaches. Of the 3 ABC islands, Aruba has the best beaches. The most famous is arguably Palm Beach and Eagle Beach, which together stretch for seven miles. It's home to the majority of hotels on the island. When you see its beautiful powdery white sand, you'll know why. It's also where you'll leave from for most of your Aruba diving.

Reefs and Rides

Most of the dive sites in Aruba are best accessed by boat. The vast majority of Aruba scuba diving sites are along the southwest coast of the island. The reef is located on the south end with many of the wrecks on the north end. Boat rides from shore to the sites are normally less than 15 minutes.

If you are staying toward the middle of the island and want to dive the north end, you may want to (have to) take a short van ride to the boat. This is what we did when we were staying at the Tarmarijn and dove the Antilla and Pedernales wrecks.

Diving

The best Aruba diving is wreck diving. While there are walls and reefs, they are generally not as good as those on its sister islands. On many of the dives you can check out both a wreck and a reef for the best of both worlds.

Aruba is currently working to preserve its reefs and to maintain the quality of Aruba diving. Preservation and educational programs have been started, including a reef clean-up program. Dozens of mooring buoys have been installed to protect the reefs and a marine park has also been established.

If you go to Aruba, I hope you have fun exploring the wrecks galore. I know many people that have fallen in love with Aruba and, who knows, you just may be the next.

Deciding where to go on your winter vacation can be both exciting and frustrating at the same time. It's exciting because you know you will be getting to visit a new place and enjoy new experiences, along with the opportunity to relax and get some extra rest. It can be frustrating because there are so many choices available.

One of the most ideal places for a winter vacation is Eilat. Situated in the southernmost part of Israel, this town of about 55,000 people is often referred to as the "window on the Red Sea". It is isolated from the rest of Israel by the Negev Desert and is sprawled right along the coast of the Red Sea. People come from all over the world to enjoy the awesome temperatures and relaxing climate.

Eilat is filled with history dating back to Biblical times. Eilat is first mentioned in the book of Exodus in the Bible and during the time of Abraham, we know that rams grazed in this area. Later, King David conquered this city along with Edom and it was then developed further by his son, King Solomon. The Queen of Sheba passed through this area also, on her way to see King David in Jerusalem. For centuries, this area has been a part of the history and culture of Israel. In 1947, when the United Nations enforced the Partition Plan, Eilat was established as a city in the Jewish state. Since that time, Eilat has continued to grow into the exciting, affordable resort that it is today.

The Red Sea is one of the main attractions of the area because it provides so much entertainment for vacationers. The sea is generally very calm, so you can participate in boating of all kinds such as kayaking, sail boating, row boating, and motor boating. Swimming and diving in the Red Sea are very spectacular experiences. The beaches along the sea also provide places to relax and soak in the warm sun. In the evenings, the nightlife begins with music, food, and entertainment on the sandy beaches of the beautiful Red Sea.

Transportation in the area is simple, as there is an airport right in the center of town. The Central Bus Station runs regular tour routes through the city and is on an hourly schedule. Although the busses and taxis are more comfortable, many people walk to enjoy all of the sights.

There are so many sights to see that one hardly knows where to begin! If you want to experience the creatures of the sea and amazing underwater fish, you will want to visit the Coral Beach, an underwater marine reserve. All equipment for diving can be rented and there are changing rooms and a snack bar for your convenience.

Another amazing attraction is the Dolphin Reef. Here, you can actually swim and interact with the dolphins. Plan to go early in the day, as the dolphins are friendliest in the morning hours and seem to tire as the day progresses. There are also beaches in this area and a spa for your relaxation.

If you want to just look at the sea animals and not get wet, you will enjoy the Underwater Observatory. Here, you will find some awesome aquariums with sea life of every color, size, and class. The aquarium surrounds the room and the fish actually swim around you as you stand in the center. Outside the building are more huge aquariums with sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays.

One place you will also want to visit in the area is Kings City. This is a biblical theme park in the shape of a medieval castle. There are caves to explore and you will journey into the past with the panoramic screens of ancient Egypt. There are the King Solomon Falls and the David Winding Slides for your fun and excitement. There is also a souvenir shop and there are food courts for your convenience as well.

Fraom September to November each year, about one billion birds migrate through this area as they travel from Europe to Africa. From March through May, the birds then migrate back to Europe. Bird watching is one of the many things that people totally enjoy in this area because of the huge variety of birds. Eilat also is the headquarters for the National Birdwatching Center.

Other interesting attractions you will find in Eilat include camel tours, freefall parachuting, an IMAX theater, and the Timna Valley Park, which contains the oldest copper mines in the world. King Solomon's Pillars, ancient pit mines and rock art are some other unique attractions for tourists. There are every kind of restaurant and hotel imaginable for your dining and accommodation needs.

Eilat will not disappoint you. There is such a variety of things to do and places to go, that the experience will leave you breathless. It truly is the perfect spot for your get-away winter vacation.

A Beginner's Guide to Liveaboard Diving

Our first liveaboard - a real diving liveaboard experience. Laying at the bottom of a reef off the coast of Similan Island Koh Ha lays a Chinese fishing boat. As I float in these turquoise waters I think about its story.

The whole trip is one of exploration and excitement - a liveaboard through the most famous dive sites in Thailand. We are headed off diving aboard the Similan liveaboard "Parinee" to get a taste of real diving.

A liveaboard is exactly what it says it is - a boat that you live in and dive from. For many years they were the preserve of hardened divers looking for challenges in very remote locations, but a few years ago liveaboards started catering to divers who were more interested in the serenity of the reefs and observing the marine life without the hassle of returning to shore each day.

We are guided by Tuk, a Thai diving instructor who has been working the Similan's for a few years. He is very into his fish (as are all the staff), but his passion lies in the smaller critters that we had never even noticed before. These stunning Islands are barely accessible to the day boats serving Khao Lak and Phuket. To experience the highlights of the area, and escape congestion on some of the sites - a growing number of recreational divers are choosing to do their diving from a liveaboard.

Dive operators were quick to spot the potential of these divers who were short on experience but eager to taste a new experience. There are now some boats that are super-luxurious, some are very budget and - in the case of our trip - even an ecologically friendly boat.

Many liveaboard virgins are worried about boredom when not diving but with up to four dives a day available, most divers are happy to relax on the sundeck between dives and catch some rays. In my time aboard the Pairnee, I struggled to read one book, write in my journal or even fill out my dive log. I did manage to log some great dives, sleep a lot, make some great new friends and eat some incredible Thai food, though.

A dive guide can make or break any liveaboard trip. The team on the boat was made up of Tuk (Thai), Ricky (Irish), Therese (Swedish) and Filip (Belgian). They more than made the trip - giving in-depth and entertaining briefings, organizing card games and charades after dinner and giving insight into the whole region and dynamic ecosystems.

At 80 feet, the Similan liveaboard was big enough to give divers the chance to spread out and it felt very stable, even in choppy seas.

While no one expected 5 star luxury - there was plenty to make the trip all the more comfortable. Cabins were air-conditioned, the showers were hot and the food was amazing. There were only 11 guests on the trip (maximum 12) and no dive group was bigger than 4 per guide. They supplied towels and sheets (organic cotton!) as well as the shampoo, soap and conditioner (all biodegradeable). I even won a shirt during charades!

On this trip we also had a videographer - Steff (English) - who did a small lecture on fish and marine life in the area. Using the video footage from each day he helped us recognize and understand a lot more about what we were seeing.

"We find that many of our guests are joining us for the first liveaboard experience." said operations manager Marcel Bruijs.

"The all-inclusive trips, the convenience to Khao Lak and Phuket and our ecologically friendly operation have opened up diving and liveaboards to a whole new class of divers. We now offer tours focused on education and conservation rather than Technical diving or remote locations"

That Chinese fishing boat? It turns out that it was illegally fishing in Thai waters and the government confiscated it. After some cajoling from local dive shops, the dangerous and damaging parts (fluids, lead based paint) were removed and she was sunk 3 years ago. Looking up from the depths as the schools of fish swimming past - I can't help but thank the park rangers for sinking this boat!

Included: Meals, coffee, tea, tanks, weights, guide service, transfers in the area, linens and even secure luggage storage

Life on board. When not diving guests can lounge about on the sun deck, watch videos on the large flat-screen TV or kick back in one of the hammocks

Sleep tight? The cabins are not huge - but comfy. Air-conditioned, with comfy sheets and blankets. Each cabin has two bunk-style beds.

Food and drink. All meals, snacks, coffee and tea are included. Beers and wine are on sale at a reasonable charge. The food was excellent throughout the trip and special dietary requirements are well catered for.

Service? Attentive and friendly Thai crew and a superb dive guide.

Other clubs like the South Florida Underwater Photography Society (www.sfups.org) and Laguna Sea Dwellers Dive Club promote underwater photography as a hobby and an art to scuba divers who prefer to capture marine life and sceneries.  Depending on club rules, photos may only be taken on site or submitted through a website for judging.

If you're looking for a tougher activity, Dolphin Divers of Sacramento, holds a regular Labor Day Spearfishing Contest.  The club also offers annual underwater scavenger hunts to its members.

western caribbean - smaller ship - scuba diving - advice!?

i'm thinking about taking a 6 or 7 night cruise to the western caribbean in oct or nov. i don't want to be with 20,000 other people, families with lots of kids, etc. i mainly want to scuba dive & eat but i don't want to be on one of those very, very small boats where diving is the only thing to do. i've never been on a cruise before.

does anyone have any advice on which cruise lines would be the best for this sort of thing?


To avoid being with "20,000 other people", go on a smaller ship and check the port schedules to see how many other ships [especially the larger ones] will be in port at the same time.

To avoid "families with lots of kids", don't cruise over any school vacations [some schools that start early have vacations in October, I hear] or in the summer or at holiday time. Also, longer cruises [10 days] will have fewer families and kids, but will then also have more older passengers.

Cruise on lines that are less "family friendly", e.g. Celebrity and HAL. I say that not because these lines don't have kids programs, but they don't have all the wacky activities that kids and "party hearty" types like and they are more traditional in tone, dress and decor.

Since you've never cruised before, you really should get a book on cruising from your library or bookstore, as there are many, many variables that you would need to consider and decide upon in order to make a final decision, such as type of cabin, length of cruise, size/age of ship, itinerary, etc, etc.

You can also get great info at CruiseCritic.com. Click on "Cruise Styles" to read about the different lines/ships and the type of passengers they appeal to [e.g. "Romantic", "Family", etc]. You can click on "Reviews" to read a pro comment about each ship and also "Member Reviews" of every ship out there. When you've done enough research to not be overwhelmed by more details, you should take a look at "Boards", where you'll find discussions on any and every aspect of cruising by experienced cruisers.

 With the increase in the popularity of the sport, numerous centers and programs for scuba diving certification has come up in recent years. In the United States alone, there are nearly 2000 professional scuba dive centers. The first thing you’d need to do before joining a program is to check out the various centers and find out which one of them should be most suitable for you.

Open Water Diver Certification:

You have to be at least 15 years old to get the open water diver certification. Most open water certifications let you dive by yourself without an instructor present (if the charter does not make it compulsory). There is also Junior Open Water Diver Certification for people between ages 10 to 15. Before getting your certification, it is recommended by almost every center that you are in good physical health. Some centers may even require you to obtain a medical certificate before enrolling in a certification program. You also need to know how to swim though you don’t necessarily have to be good at it. However, you should be able to swim 200 yards using any stroke, and be able to float or tread on water for about 10 minutes.

Scuba Dive Centers for Certification:

There are numerous scuba dive centers around that can teach you the technical background knowledge and practical skills of scuba diving, but not all of them are completely reliable. Try to do a little research before registering yourself for a program. Also consider an agency that offers an internationally recognized certification card if you travel a lot.

Some of the most popular and biggest scuba diving certification agencies include PADI, NAUI, YMCA, Scuba Schools International, and PDIC. These organizations offer some of the best scuba courses and training instructors available. However, the training method, duration, lessons etc may not be the same with all of them. For example, NAUI courses are often more technical in the classroom than other programs but can’t be said better or worse than the rest. So, the outcome of the training and course will ultimately depend on your own effort and individual instructor.

Bubblemakers, Scuba rangers, and SASY are some of the popular agencies specializing in providing Junior Open Water Diver Certification for people between ages 10 to 15.

Course:

The duration of a scuba diving certification course usually depends on you and your schedule. Basically, it takes about two to three months to get a full certification which would cost between $175.00 and $250.00 and may include accessories such as books, tables, and rental equipment etc (you’ll have to buy or rent your own scuba diving equipment). A certification course normally includes classroom work, examinations, practical skills sessions, and four to five open water dives. Classroom work may be held once a week with more intensive weekends which include advanced reading, while open water dives typically take two more days.

The basic scuba diver certification permits you to dive from 60 to 100 feet below the surface, while an advanced scuba diving certification allows you to take deep dives of about 130 feet. The advanced scuba diving certification concentrates more on safety, physics, navigation, night diving, physiology diving and the dive tables.

One downside of the club is that it "does not conduct diver training or instruction, neither does it service dive equipment. I am planning a Vacaction, and would like some ideas as to where to go.?

Hi, I am in the Army, currently serving over in Iraq for my third tour, am I am trying to figure out where I want to go on my mid-tour leave (18 days) sometime during March. So basically I have a free plane ride to anywhere in the world that I want to go, Currently I am thinking about going to Europe and ski out in the Alps I am also thinking about going to go to Austrilia and scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef, then go to New Zealand. Any other ideas would be great, and if there are any single woman between the ages of 23 and 27 if you can pay for your airfare you might be able to come with. I am not really looking for a tag-a-long but you never know as to what might happen. Also because I am in the Army I wont be able to afford some place like Dubi, and kind of prefer some where that there is that is not super hot.
