When you fly to Egypt to start your holiday, after travelling across miles and miles of sand dunes, your plane starts to approach the coast of the Red Sea and suddenly an unusual sight approaches. It's almost as if a section of a big city somewhere else has just been picked up and placed here. So let's start with the sun or the amazing weather that Sharm benefits from. Sunshine is what most people come here for and they are rarely disappointed. Even during the middle of winter Sharm has an average of seven hours of sun each day and because that is about the length of daylight during the winter months, that means sunshine all day long. The same holds for summer too. At this time of year the days and nights are equally long and that usually means plenty of warmth too. During June and July the daytime temperature can reach the high thirties, sometimes even reaching forty degrees Celsius, which means these months may not be the best for family visits.
Evening temperatures do reduce slightly but in the summer this drop is limited by the low humidity in this part of the world. The temperature at night can still be in the high twenties, which would make sleeping uncomfortable for those not used to this weather. You may have heard about desert temperatures dropping considerably at night, but in Sharm this is not the case. Moving onto the sea or, more accurately, the Red Sea. This is a 1400 mile inlet stretching from the Indian Ocean in the South up to Egypt in the North, with Asia, namely Saudi Arabia and Yemen on the Eastern side and Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea bordering the Western side. The prime attraction of this sea, apart from the weather mentioned above, is its suitability for diving. Since it was discovered in the fifties and made famous by the TV programmes of the Frenchman Jacques Cousteau, divers from all over the world have travelled there to dive in the warm waters to observe the plant and animal life and to test their skills on several of the shipwrecks that lie in the waters. Sharm is particularly well suited for divers, with most of the larger hotels running their own diving schools, with on-site instructors providing tuition for everyone from beginners to those training to be instructors themselves. The dive schools also organise day trips to the many dive locations on the peninsula, including wrecks such as the HMS Thistlegorm, the Dunraven and the Carina. The Dunraven is the closest of these wrecks to Sharm, while the others are around 60 Kilometers away. Dive trips to wrecks in this area are normally part of a two day programme from Sharm and some include a night dive at the end of the first day. The ship was sunk by one of two German Heinkel bombers that were on a long-range mission from Crete. The wreck site was discovered again by Jacques Cousteau and many regard it as one of the best wreck dives in the world.
Finally there is the sand in Sharm and there is certainly no shortage of that on the inland side of the resort. The Egyptian desert starts almost immediately behind the hotels and continues uninterrupted for up to six miles before the rocky landscape arrives and the ground starts to climb up towards to Mount Sinai, fifty miles to the north.

If I wanted to go while on holiday, what would I be entitled to do? if very little, would there be any short courses while over there which would allow me to have a go?
Hello. I used to work as a dive instructor in Sharm, and took people just like you diving every day (often more than once!). Sharm is a great place to experience SCUBA for the first time--it's not far away, the water is warm and clear, and there's loads to see.
Many of the hotels have dive centres attached, and it's very common for the dive centres to offer free 'try-dives' in the hotel pool, to drum up business. If you're interested in trying SCUBA, I would suggest that you seek out your 'local' dive centre on your very first day. Find out when/where they do try-dives in the pool, and have a go to see if you like it. If you do, you then have two options for diving in open water, both of which are offered by practically all the dive centres in Sharm: you can go for an 'intro-dive' (the official PADI program, if offered, is called 'Discover Scuba Diving'), or you can sign up for a basic certification course (again, mostly certified by PADI, although there are a few BSAC and SSI centres).
An intro-dive/DSD will cost you around 50 Euro, takes less than half a day, and does not qualify you to dive again in the future (although a properly conducted PADI DSD can be 'credited' towards an entry-level PADI course).
The PADI Open Water Diver (OWD) course costs around 350 Euro (not including certification fee), takes 3-5 days (depending on student numbers and abilities), and gives you a license to dive for the rest of your life. It is a 'full' license, i.e. it (theoretically) qualifies you to plan and carry out dives as an autonomous diver, with another OWD, to a maximum depth of 18 m. (In practice, most newly-qualified OWDs will dive as part of a guided group for their first 20-odd dives or more--and many centres insist upon it, for safety and liability reasons).
The PADI Scuba Diver (SD) course is basically half the OWD syllabus, so time/cost is reduced accordingly. Because you don't learn how to plan dives yourself, the SD licence restricts you to shallow dives (12 m or less) accompanied by an instructor, until you upgrade to OWD.
Whichever you go for, you need to be in reasonably good health, with no medical conditions which could make it dangerous for you to dive (e.g. ear problems, asthma, diabetes, heart problems, etc.). If you have any such issues, you'll need a doctor's OK before a professional instructor/centre will take you diving (one of the marks of diving professionalism is that they place a higher value on their customer's safety than their money). You can do this in Sharm--there is an excellent diving doctor at the Sharm recompression chamber, Dr. Adel Taher: he is the Diver's Alert Network (DAN) liaison in Egypt.
A couple of words to the wise: Don't go straight to the tour reps for information about diving--ask for directions to the dive centre at the hotel reception first, or look at a map. The reps all work on commission (including the Europeans), and will quite happily sell you diving activities with a dodgy dive centre/cattle boat at the other end of town, if the kickbacks are better.
If you don't like the look of the local centre, you can always go to the reps afterwards, but find out exactly what you're paying for first, BEFORE you hand over your cash. Make sure you're getting your diving from a genuine dive centre, ideally one registered with one of the agencies, and not some cowboy with a leaky boat, a few rusty cylinders, and some tatty hand-me-down gear. There are no effective consumer protection laws in Egypt, so it's 'buyer beware' all the way.
Finally, DON'T leave your try-dive until the last day of your holiday, since you shouldn't fly within 12 hours after diving, and no PROFESSIONAL instructor will take you into open water if they know you'll be getting on a plane that evening. We used to have this conversation so often it stopped being funny: 'So how did you like your pool-dive?' 'It was great! Can I do this in the sea?' 'Sure, just fill in this form. Have you got anything booked for tomorrow?' 'Can I do it this afternoon? I'm flying home tonight' '...D'OH...!'

Water temps in Sharm in August-September are in the high 20s (25-28°C) and this doesn't generally vary with depth (i.e. no thermoclines).
So what you'll need depends primarily on how much you feel the cold (NB for comparison, most UK municipal pools are kept at 27-29°C), how many dives you're planning to do per day, how long you're hoping to stay underwater each time, and how deep you're planning to go on each dive. This last matters because wetsuits (being made of foamed rubber) will be compressed at depth, with a corresponding loss of insulation: a suit 5 mm thick at the surface will be 2.5-3.0 mm thick at 10 m, and 1-2 mm thick at 30 m.
From personal experience: I breathe pretty slowly, meaning that I can easily get a 60-70 min dive out of a single tank, even on deep dives -- provided I don't get cold. However, I am tall but skinny (about 1.8 m, 60 kg), which means I lose body heat relatively quickly. Therefore, to maximise my dive time, I prefer to wear a full-length 5 mm one-piece 'steamer' (with a lycra rash vest underneath) even for Red Sea summer diving (in winter I would add a shortie and a hooded vest).
That said, as a working guide/instructor, I have taken people diving in the Red Sea summer season who were comfortable just in 5 mm or 3 mm shorties -- and a hardcore few even went diving without any thermal protection at all (although if you are going to do this, I would strongly recommend wearing a dark-coloured T-shirt and shorts for UV protection -- sunscreen is bad for reef life -- and to reduce equipment chafing).
Wetsuits take up a lot of luggage space -- so the simplest solution might just be to rent an appropriate suit from whichever centre you'll be diving with. Since Red Sea dive centres have to provide equipment for year-round diving, this will likely be either a 5 mm shortie, or a 5 mm longjohn/ steamer.
If you are intent on taking your own suits, and assuming that your holiday will be hotel- (i.e. shore-) based, I would recommend 3 mm full-length steamers as a good compromise between warmth and baggage bulk. If these turn out to be inadequate for diving, again, you can always rent a warmer suit instead.
However, if you are going to be diving from a safari boat, then renting an additional/alternative suit may not be an option: in this case, I would recommend you _also_ take 3 mm shorties, which you can wear over the top of the 3 mm steamers for extra warmth if needed (yes, the shorties will take up additional baggage space, but you won't need as much 'evening-wear' for a boat-based holiday).

Hi, I've been diving in Sharm in April 2006, and Marsa in September 2009. To me, there is no real difference. All depends on the spots you go to dive, there are nice spots in both places. In Sharm there is a natural reserve (Ras Mohammed), where the corals are well preserved. But in Marsa, there are much less divers and so the nature is preserved too. I wish you nice dives.

I'm based in London and have just got my PADI Openwater Diver Cert. I'm keen for me and a buddy to go on a diving break - but don't know the best way to go about it. Are there any London clubs that organise such trips (either in or outside the UK) or any holiday companies that specialise in diving jaunts? Or is it better to get a standard hoilday to a scuba resort (i.e. Sharm El Sheikh) and organise the dive trip when I'm there?
You can get some really good bargains in Egypt on the Red Sea coast at this time of year. There are several diving holiday organisations which arrange trips. I have used Tony Backhurst Scuba (web site at www.scuba.co.uk) many times. They cater for both experienced & inexperienced divers. You could even go for your Advanced Open Water cert whilst you are there as this consists mainly of experience dives with only a tiny bit of additional bookwork- practical stuff rather than theory. Personally, I would arrange my diving before going to be sure you can get booked in. You can also chat to them here about the sort of diving you want to do etc etc before you go. There are many many other places you can go around the world but Egypt is pretty jacked up for divers with some very good prices too. The groups going there are mainly divers so the airlines etc are very familiar with diving equipment luggage etc. If you want to go as part of a bigger group then best to contact your local dive centres- or the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) has clubs just about everywhere-their web site is www.bsac.com & you will be able to get details of all the clubs in your area.

Guide to the Egypt Property Market Part Two - El Gouna
One of the Red Sea's newest and most luxurious resorts, El Gouna is a stunning new master development, perfectly located along the shores of the clear blue waters of Egypt's Red Sea. Property in Hurghada
Demand has grown continually at locations all down the Red Sea. Like so many Egyptian destinations, Hurghada was, for many yeas, a small fishing village on the shores of the Red Sea and located close to the sands of the Sahara desert.
Today Hurghada has become a world-class resort and is known internationally as a major centre for water-sports. Windsurfing, sailing, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, diving or simply lazing on the beaches that extend for a total of 20 kilometres in the year-round sunshine means that the town is a magnet for those who love being in or next to the water. And you can do all of this in temperatures of between 25C (winter) and 35C (summer).
The other bonus with Hurghada is that because it is home to so many different activities, there's no need to go elsewhere. Sahl Hasheesh Real Estate
Quite simply, the resort of Sahl Hasheesh is five-star living. The town is home to a number of top quality hotels, a 12-kilometre beachfront and is located just 25 minutes from Hurghada's international airport which means that visitors arrive without being hassled and exhausted.
Additionally, there are direct flights form Europe. On top of all that, it is home to a top class marina and yacht club and in the future this will be the largest Marina in the Red Sea. The sum of around €175 million was spent on the resort at the outset to ensure that a complete infrastructure was in place. This included roads, water and electricity supplies and the promenade. Even though work is continuing at Sahl Hasheesh, this is all due for completion in about four years time.
The aim has been to create such exceptional facilities, attractions and entertainment that anyone staying at the resort would have everything at their fingertips. Th intention is that in the long-term, Sahl Hasheesh should rival Mediterranean resorts such as Cannes.

Now the resort is home to a wide range of accommodation and even at the top end, prices for Europeans seem inexpensive. For the active, there is an enormous amount to do from bowling to riding and go-karting to bungee jumping.

Located a mere 10 minutes from the International airport and Na'ama Bay, the course opened in 1997. It features 18 man-made lakes and 1,250 trees have been planted. A double-ended practice centre is home to the Jolie Ville International Golf Academy and beginner and advanced courses are available.
El Gouna & Marsa Alam
In 1989, the first moves to create the resort of El Gouna took place. Now, two decades later, the dream has become reality. These gentle creatures are believed to have been the basis of mermaid legends when glimpsed swimming in the water from a distance. Samadai Reef, known as Dolphin House, is home to a large group of spinner dolphins and this will be an ideal chance to get up close with these extraordinary creatures.

Egypt, Morocco Or Turkey?
The reality is that property investors found Turkey and Morocco some time ago whereas Egypt is only just receiving the attention it deserves.
Certainly in the case of the first two, there is a risk of the tourist market becoming over-saturated whereas Egypt is going through the initial stages of a period of major expansion.
Only recently has the spotlight focussed on the Red Sea property resorts and the huge potential that they offer. In addition, the entry costs to the Egyptian property market are exceptionally low even when you compare them with Turkey and Morocco. And among the advantages that Egypt has is that the cost of living is still low in comparison to the other two and the climate is a major factor in drawing visitors to Egypt with a season that really is year-round. Ras Mohammed National Park is both a terrestrial and an aquatic nature reserve. The arid desert terrain of sand dunes, gravel plains, fossilized corals and Granite Mountains is home to a number of rare mammal species: Dorcas gazelle, Nubian ibex and red fox. Easier to spot are the resident birds like terns, herons, gulls and ospreys. Thousands of white storks pass through Ras Mohammed each year, heading south during September/October and back north during April/May. About 85 flora species live in the park, including mangroves.

This is for anyone who has been, who can tell me a little bit about what trips can be done from Sharm, with costs if possible. I am travelling in September and am aware of the obvious snorkelling, scuba diving etc, but want to get out and see some culture. We definitely want to do the pyramids, but are not sure of prices.

you can go to St Catherine's Monastery by a bus tour . this Monastery has bushes from the time of Moses . nearby is the Mountain where Moses received the Commandments .
if you take a boat to Ras Mohamed , you can enjoy the best snorkeling , and have lunch and soft drinks during a half day cruise .
if you take the plane / bus you can go to Cairo to see the Pyramids , the Sphinx , Sakkara Step Pyramid . you can have an evening Nile Cruise with show and dinner , you can visit the Museum as well. have a nice trip.

Imagine yourself surrounded by the Sinai Mountains and the glorious Red Sea, leaning over the ball on the eighteenth hole, anticipating a cold beer on the 19th and watching the sun go down. Sharm el Sheik hosts a beautiful 18-hole golf course situated at the Movenpick Golf. The course is 6021 yards and graded as a par 72. Outside guests are welcome; however, we recommend a reservation. Golf lessons available upon request and karts can be rented in the golf shop. If you just want to hit a few balls - the driving range is waiting for you.
Water Skiing or Wakeboarding
If your fancy is more above the waves than under, check out the opportunities for water skiing or wakeboarding. Ten kilometers south of Na'ama Bay is Sharm el Maya is a protected bay with the perfect conditions for skiing. Give wakeboarding a try for fun. You can even take a lesson. Try your luck and attempt to jump through the wake turning 80 degrees. Sun & Fun are located on the beach at Iberotel Palace hotel. Banana rides and inter-tube rides are also available.
Bungee catapult
Not for the faint hearted, but still ten minutes of guaranteed adrenalin pumping action - plus an amazing view. The giant catapult is situated in the Na'ama Bay parking lot next to the Na'ama Bay Hotel. It's very simple; you are strapped into a seat in an open sphere cage, which is attached to two elastic cables. 3, 2, 1 and blast off, you are bungeed skywards.
Go Kart Racing
If you feel the need for speed, but not of the skyward variety, then check out go karting. It's not just for kids! Ghibli Raceway is a professional go-kart center, with four challenging circuits in one, built to FIA standards. As a competitor you are given racing overalls, a cotton balaclava and a full-face helmet. The raceway is situated on the airport road just outside Na'ama Bay next to Sofitel and the Hyatt hotel.
Horseback Riding
If you are an early bird and love horses, then take the opportunity to go on a sunrise trip out in the desert or along the beach. There are a couple of stables offering excursion rides. There is nothing nicer than being on horseback in the peaceful desert at dawn, while it is still cool and enjoyable. If dawn is not your thing then there are also sunset rides. Just be honest and let the guide know if you are a novice or experienced, so you are ensured a suitable horse and pace. Concorde Hotel and Sofitel just outside Na'ama Bay have a well run and profession operations and the horses are well looked after. Most rides vary from one to two hours.
Quad runners
Taking a cruise on a quad runner is a fun, fast activity and a great way of getting out into the desert. There are quite a few companies offering these rides and most of them can be found on the desert side of the main road running through Na'ama Bay. There are sunrise and sunset trips as well as daylong excursions (be careful of the day temps. in the summer months). Whatever time you decide to become a desert biker then a good tip is to bring a "Kofeya" or headdress as there is a lot of dust and sand driven up by the quads and it can be a bit rough on the hair, face and eyes.
Ice Skating
Believe it or not there is an ice rink in Sharm el Sheik. It is real ice, so it's really cool, making it a pleasant way to escape the heat during the day. There is also a snack bar and a few seating areas for you to rest. The rink is situated in the sporting area of the Concorde Hotel on the airport road north of Na'ama bay.
