20 years old, leaving home and moving to new country for first time! Pretty terrified. Any advice?
I'm 20 and was born and raised in London, UK. I've recently been offered a paid internship at a dive centre in Egypt, and will moving there for a minimum of 6 months next week. I've never lived away from home, let alone a 5.5 hour flight away so naturally I'm terrified. It's going to be a new world, an old fishing village where the desert meets the Red Sea thriving with diving, water sports and popular amongst nomadic backpackers. So far from my life here in London. I'm worried about all the usual things, not making friends, not being able to take care of myself, having to find a new place to live, pay bills etc. Can anyone offer me any advice to calm my fears?
I sort of know what you're going through. When I was 18, I moved 1500 miles from my hometown though admittedly still within the US. It can be a scary prospect going to an unfamiliar place full of unfamiliar people. What I can say is that the fear doesn't last that long. The first week or so will be scary and probably a little depressing, but after that you'll enjoy all the new scenery. In the end, you will be far better for doing this. It's a great opportunity to expand your mind and learn about life from a different culture. It will change you in profound ways that you can't even imagine until they happen.
In the meantime, go on iTunes and download the Economist's podcast on Cairo. It will give you a good idea about what to expect from urban Egyptians.
