Scuba Diving In Belize: A Package Of Fascinating Adventures
Found in the western Caribbean ocean and south of the Yucatan peninsula, you will come across the small Central American country of Belize. Home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, an adventure to see the hundreds of different types of coral, sponges and other marine life from the dozens coral atolls or cayes as they are termed is to be experienced when scuba diving in Belize.
Divers, whether a beginner or experienced, will find everything they need available at the many dive shops or resorts to make their diving adventure great one for the log book.
If this is your first scuba diving experience, you can sign up for classes at one of the many dive shops or dive resorts. Scope of the classes vary between basic scuba breathing in shallow water, open water certification or advanced certifications. All scuba diving in Belize is performed under the supervision of the Belize regulated dive masters.
For those who have completed their classroom work and basic scuba instruction, but have not completed the final exam, check out dives and certifications are available. To make certain you bring all of the required paperwork from your stateside instructor, it is a good idea to call ahead to the dive shop.
Leading you to many of the popular diving locations in the lap of luxury,
several dive operators offer Live-Aboard diving boats. Room, meals and air all just a few feet away from your room are counted in the all inclusive rates. Better to have book well in advance as these boats are quite popular.
Popular diving areas known as the Hol-Chan Marine Reserve and Shark-Ray Alley are found on the southern end of Ambergris Caye and a short boat ride from San Pedro. Each with its own exceptional habitat and bio-diversity, this protected area is divided into 4 zones. Coral reefs, mangroves and sea grass beds make up the different segments of the reserve. For night diving sites, Hol-Chan is among the best.
Upon reaching at Shark Ray Alley, expect some company. It's been sometime that the local fishermen have been cleaning their catches here so the sharks and rays will appear near your boat waiting for a free lunch.
The famous Great Blue Hole is another popular diving spot located on Lighthouse Reef, a day trip east of Turneffe Reef. Discovered and filmed by Jacques Cousteau in the early 1970's, it is more than 400 feet deep and 1000 feet across. Experienced diver is offered a chance to go deep in the Blue Hole, while exploring the corals and stalactites that were shaped when the sea levels were much lower.
Scuba diving in Belize is distinct from other areas in the Caribbean as the water temperature only varies between the mid 70s to the mid 80s year-round. Water visibility alters upon location but you can assume to have 50 foot or better viewing with 100 foot visibility not uncommon in some areas. During the summer months, water clarity will be less in the rainy season.
Chase the rays, swim with the Whale Sharks, feed the groupers or relax in the shallow mangrove cayes beside the manatees. Going scuba diving in Belize has something to offer all divers regardless of experience. Make early bookings now and arrange your schedule for such a wonderful diving adventure.
