With the world's warmest and saltiest sea water in its depth, the Red Sea holds many mysteries and theories about its origin and name while possessing deeply fascinating beauty beneath its dark waters. Found as an extension of the Indian Ocean and huddled between Asia and Africa, it is open to the Middle Eastern countries from its north end and stretches over 1200 miles in length with a maximum width of 190 miles.

Another remarkable factor is that the Red Sea is a diver's paradise with its ravishing coral reefs found within its great depths. There are several reasons behind the name ‘Red Sea'. These include the seasonal growth of a red plant close to the water surface. Another reason states that ‘Red' refers to the south while it is also believed that it is termed red because it borders the Egyptian dessert which is called the red land.




Even with a high salinity resulting from lack of rivers flowing to it and the dessert storms and high evaporation it is subjected to, the red sea is still an excellent eco system with a rich diversity of fish species amounting to thousands of varieties. It is also fringed with a string of coral reefs stretching along the coastal edge that are also the places where sharks have the habit of visiting. In spite of certain hazards that have been reported in a few areas that are now forbidden for swimming, the red sea is still a highly sought after diving destination with popular spots such as Ras Mohommed and Elphinston.




With the Red sea rated as one of the top ten diving sites in the world, it is no wonder that the coastal stretch of Saudi Arabia has opened into the thriving prospects of Tourism especially after renowned divers have praised its diving expeditions.
