I have always wanted to visit Australia, but never had the funds. Now, I think I may be able to afford it. I was thinking about visiting either Sydney or Cairns since I would love to see the harbor and opera house, but I love to scuba dive and the Great Barrier Reef is calling. I would love to fly Qantas aboard one of their new A380's, but if there is a cheaper airline, I'd have to settle. How much do you think a round trip flight from Chicago in America would be to Cairns or Sydney, accommodations, food, and maybe a day or two of scuba diving on the reef would cost?
The cheapest flight to Sydney I could was a little over $A1000, which be about the same in $US. As for hotels e.t.c Sydney and Cairns can be similar in price, in that both have highly expensive and fairly cheap accomodation. Both places have cheap and expensive food, including the classic fast food places like McDonalds. Though generally Cairns will be somewhat cheaper than Sydney.
Really it depends on what kind of experience you want. If you a more adventerous tropical holiday then Cairns is the way to go, if you want a city experience then come down to Sydney. Time of year make a difference. Cairns is best from April - October during the dry season, with Sydney at tit's best anytime of year, but it really shines climate wise about September to March where goes from warm to some summer heat up to around 90F (we can get the odd day over 100F in summer).
As for scuba in Cairns I can't help you, but I'd allow a few hundred dollars per session including equipment hire.
