Im going to Australia for 5 weeks Dec-Jan, Il be in Cairns early January and i know its rainy season then but what does that really mean? is it likely to be one heavy downpour all day or the odd little shower??? does rainy season means its going to rain all the time or just now and then... do you think this will ruin things like diving in the GB Reef? Anyone whos been in jan or lives there would be awesome
Dec-Jan in Cairns....be prepared for the stifling heat and humidity, never mind the rain (which can bring relief from the heat). It is the "wet" season, which means there will be times when there will be torrential downpours, so heavy that while driving it is almost impossible to see 1m in front with the wipers on full. It won't rain every single day of your holidays, but when it does you won't be able to do very much outdoors. And incidentally, it is also "stinger" season which means the ocean will be teeming with irukanji jellyfish and box jellyfish. Swimming at any beaches in North Queensland entails swimming in "stinger" enclosures, an area cordoned off with netting for safety. On one occasion our local stinger net was closed due to a crocodile located swimming in it!
You are taking your holidays during the "off-peak" tourism season, so don't expect the endless, sunny and beautiful days the area is renowned for.
Personally, I love the "wet" season - it is what keeps the surroundings so tropical and green.
