What should I do at the Great Barrier Reef, in Port Douglas?

I'm headed to the Great Barrier Reef with two friends, and we'll be there for five full days (Dec 19 to Dec 25). We're staying in Port Douglas (at "Dougies"), and we aren't currently planning on renting a car (though it's an open possibility). None of us have been snorkeling or scuba diving before.

Question for those of you who have been there: How do you think we should spend those five days?

Dougies is a back-packer hostel, you'll find heaps of tour brochures etc and other back-packers full of information and recommendations. Port Douglas (the locals call it Port) has 2 local bus companies running around town and to nearby Mossman. You can hire a bike and ride around town, it's an easy ride, nice and flat. Dougies is a brisk walk to the main tourist strip of shops and restaurants, as well as the popular Fourmile Beach. It is the 'wet' season so be prepared for heat and humidity, mosquitos and sand flies. Tour buses run out of town to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation (pristine rainforests). Tour boats will take you out to nearby Low Isles or further out to the reef proper (Croc hunter Steve Irwin died in that vicinity). Crocodiles inhabit the harbour and inlet too.
The ocean is warm but unfit to swim in due to deadly jellyfish, however you can swim in the swimming enclosure on the main beach. A cotters market is held every Sunday, it's a great time to try out some tropical fruit - not your normal supermarket stock.
Or you may simply want to put your feet up and relax - Port Douglas does this well.
