Brazilian Visa Requirements For Tourists

With its fantastic beaches, excellent food and amazing scenery, Brazil is an excellent choice for adventurous travelers. However, before you can go, you need to obtain a Brazilian visa.

This can be trickier than it sounds. Brazil will not issue a visa on arrival for you. You need to apply in advance, and the Brazil visa system has a reputation for being difficult to navigate. Here's what you need to apply:

  • A valid US passport. The expiration date on your passport must be at least 6 months in the future, and you must have two or more blank pages in the back so that the visa can be attached.

  • One completed Brazilian visa application

  • 2 passport-sized photos

  • A copy of your itinerary showing the dates you plan to enter and leave Brazil.

  • A photocopy of your driver's license or state-issued ID card. The copy must be legible.

  • If you will be visiting friends or relatives, you also need a letter from your hosts.

You may also need to get shots. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required of travelers who have been to any of the following countries in the past 3 months (90 days): Angola, Bolivia, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, French Guiana, Gabon, Ghana, Gambia, Republic of Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sudan or Venezuela. Yellow fever is endemic in all of these regions, so if you've traveled to any of these countries in the past 3 months you really should have a current vaccination already.

Brazil has a "jurisdictional" visa system. Each Brazilian consulate only issues visas to residents of specific regions of the US. So, for example, the consulate in New York only issues Brazilian visas to residents of Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and the Bermuda Islands, while the consulate office in DC only issues visas for people living in DC, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and North American military bases (except Guam). Make sure you apply at the correct consulate: more information can be found at the website for the Brazilian consulate in San Francisco.
