Diving Micronesia

Micronesia stretches across the pacific, the 2,300 islands start at the Philippines in the East and goes West to Hawaii. The islands are grouped into several independent states and other territories overseen by other countries such as the United States.

Probably the most famous island is Palau thanks to the tv series Survivor but there are world renowned dive sites such as Blue Corner. The strong currents surge up a drop off and divers are attached by reef hooks and just hang on and watch the grey reef sharks, tunas and other big fish just feed in the surge.

Guam is the hub of travel in this region and will offer some good diving in itself. It is a wired place of Americana with people wearing Hawaii shirts and hard rock cafes and is populated by Japanese tourists. The Northern Mairana Islands to Guams north provide a good chance to get away from it all and Rota, Siapan and Tinian are worth exploring both under water and on land.

The Federated States of Micronesia stretch across an expanse of ocean to Palau's east with the famous Yap for its manta rays while Chuuk is one the best destinations for wreck diving. Approx 60 ships from the Japanese Imperial Fleet were caught unawares and sunk in 1944 operation hailstone, which is the Japanese equivalent of Pearl Harbour.

The Marshall Islands are a fairly new dive destination but famous for bikini Atoll where the U.S nuclear testing was carried out. Divers can explore wrecks such as USS Saratoga which is one of the few diveable aircraft carriers in the world.
