i'm going to asia for 18 months, which malaria talets should i take?
I'm going away to asia, places I know for sure i'll be visiting are Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia....then i'll travel all over India over a year and then I'll go to Nepal. I've been to the docs and found out about malaria tablets...I have 3 options...
1. Malarone ($70 for 12 tablets and taken daily so way too expensive for 18 months)
2. Larrium (side effects are acute psychosis...also no scuba diving...this is not possible for me as i want to do lots of diving...also you can only take it for 3 months running)
3. Doxycyclin (taken daily, 50c p/table, side effects are stomach upset and prone to sunburn...also can only be taken for 3 months running)
So whilst I would probably choose 3 as it seems the best out of a bad bunch, it can only be taken for 3 months. So does anyone know what people do who travel in high risk malaria places ofr longer than 3 months? Or even if someone lives in such an area...how do they protect themselves?
I have been traveling in Asia for five years and now live in Vietnam. I never take Malaria pills. When I started out I was taking Larrium and it was really horrible. It turned me off all malaria pills.
You will find that there are only certain sections of your trip where the pills are necessary. And the areas are well marked in guide books etc. so there is no need for you to take the pills constantly.
If you are going into a specific area that is known for Malaria then take the pills by all means and use common sense with your Mozzy sprays and lotions. Wear long sleeves and long pants in the afternoon and evening. Cover your wrists, hands, ankles and feet twice a day with your choice of anti Mozzy repelent.
This should do the trick.
Buy there is no need to spend months on these, not so great, treatments. You will find that you do not need them as much as you thought you would.
Good luck.
