Fuerteventura Holiday Attractions for the Entire Family
Whether you are from America, Europe, or somewhere else on planet Earth, the just-discovered popularity of the Spanish Canary Islands makes them the ideal location for vacations away from the hustle and bustle of more frequented tourist spots. Islands such as Fuerteventura, population 30,000 and located 60 miles or 100km off the west coast of Africa, are being discovered and appreciated by singles and families alike, especially because of the holiday attractions they offer.
For example, because Fuerteventura sits at the same latitude as resorts in Florida and Mexico, visitors can expect similar climates and over 3000 hours of sunshine each year. The miles and miles of sandy or volcanic rock beaches invite sunbathing and strolling, clothing optional. Over 150 beaches border the crystal blue seas. In fact, some of the finest beaches in Europe are located on this little island.
In the south, Jandia beach offers lagoons and dunes to explore as well as the perfect location and weather conditions for windsurfing. Flag Beach, outside of Corralejo attracts tourists from all over the world, but especially English ones. Bathroom facilities and lifeguards are a bonus, as a parent travelling with children will attest. At Caleta de Fuste on the east shore and close to the airport, you can find an elaborate man-made resort, complete with a beach created from imported sand. Typical tourist resort amenities are available for those who want creature comforts wherever they travel.
On the other hand, the adventurous can rent 4WD or quad vehicles to go exploring the remote beaches over on the west coast or to the rougher terrain on the north part of the island. Following contoured dirt tracks keeps everyone on the trail. Proper equipment rental and pre-departure training will help assure that your friends or family all return in one piece.
Your Fuerteventura holidays can be as relaxing or energizing as you desire. Walking trails wander along picturesque coastline, offering panoramic views from strategically placed boardwalks. But you can also head out to the volcanic, other-world areas or into lush gardens created purposefully for your enjoyment.
You might like to stop at the island's only zoo, the Oasis de Los Camellos, in the small village of La Lajita, in the southern part of the island. Having one of Europe's most important botanical gardens with more than 2,300 varieties of cacti alone, the park also includes native animals such as snakes, sea lions, parrots, and birds of prey. Your children will love the daily demonstrations done with these residents. But that's not all to this park. Animals from all over the world are housed on the 780,000 square meters of property. Open all year round, the zoo is always a favorite spot for young and old alike.
One of the most popular attractions at Fuerteventura is the water sports that are available here. Continually warm water temperatures of 68 degrees F/20 degrees C invite scuba divers and snorkelers to explore coral reefs and colonized shipwrecks. There are excellent diving spots as well. Tuna, rays, angel sharks, and moray eels drift through colorful ocean flora, waiting to be glimpsed by curious visitors. For the inexperienced, dive centers offer lessons as well as equipment rental.
Another popular sport here involves trying to stay on top of the water as much as you can. Each July, the world windsurfing competitions are held in the wind and waves off Fuerteventura. Surfers from around the world gather to test their skills. The relatively calm waters and steady Atlantic winds can help even a beginner learn the art of windsurfing, and qualified teachers are readily available. If getting wet is not so much your style, sailing crews are ready to take you out on yachts or catamarans. You can even rent your own boat if you have some experience with sailing.
Whether you choose water sports, hiking and biking, or relaxing beach time, your Fuerteventura holiday vacation will be memorable as an unhurried, un-crowded experience in a picturesque location with a perfect climate. Isn't that what every get-away should be?
