Busuanga Dive Vacation

The Bold and the Tasty: Palawan's Tamilok

When on vacation, be it on our native land or abroad, it is advisable to try something different and foreign. Go sky-diving or mountain climbing perhaps. Brave the white water rivers, or bike across provinces. But if you are not that adventurous, maybe a different and extreme culinary treat is the right adventure for you.

Such as the tamilok of Palawan. Found in dead mangrove trees, this edible worm looking mollusk is a delicacy among the locals and they will gladly recommend it to tourists for a different kind of culinary rush. They usually thrive among the thick mangrove areas of Taytay, El Nido, Busuanga, Culion, Coron and Linapacan, which statistically are the places most tourists often visit.

But with the abundance of exotic delicacies in our numerous islands and even other neighboring Asian countries such as locusts, snakes, frogs, bats and even cockroach, what sets the tamilok apart is that is actually tastes really good. Most who tried it compared tamilok to oyster, even saying that it tastes better than the latter. Palawan locals would recommend tamilok served kilawin style, or raw with just onions, peppers and vinegar. A bottle of tuba, a locally brewed alcohol is best alongside the kilawing tamilok.

Travelling to Palawan will always leave a mark of excitement as the food and location will always be refreshing, authentic and entiscing to the senses.

It may not be visually appetizing, but tamilok is known world-wide because of its bizarre nature but yummy taste. So why not try it now?
