Scuba Diving In Cozumel

Best times to visit Cozumel?

I have an opportunity to stay in the Cancun/Cozumel area for a week, free of charge, the catch is it would have to be August or September of this year. I want to know the advantages and disadvantages. Personally I think I'd rather go in September, but I've heard it's hurricane season--not that I'm worried about a hurricane necessarily, just bad weather.

We want this to be mostly a scuba dive trip, but plan to throw in some beach, ruins, snorkel time as well as anything else that would be in the area. I know August can be hot, but we'd rather do hot than stormy. Again, I'm looking for advantages and disadvantages of traveling in those times, but wouldn't mind scuba recommendations if you've got them.

I tend to travel to Cozumel in November (Thanksgiving), Feb/March (Carnival), and July (US Independence Day) so I don't have any first-hand experience with Cozumel in August or September.

However....I think if I were you I would choose August over September for the following reasons.

1) September tends to average a lot more rainfall than August. Rain isn't a big problem while you are underwater, but it hurts like hell on the boat rides and puts a damper on any land-based activities. See http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/MXQR0074 for a comparison chart. August will be warmer but chances are it will also be drier.

2) September and October tend to be the peak of hurricane season in the Caribbean. While there is always some risk of a storm anytime during hurricane season, the probability and severity of storms tend to increase during that period. As can be seen at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/basics/climo.shtml, September has the highest probability of hurricanes in the region of Mexico that Cancun and Cozumel are located.

While it is impossible to predict with certainty when weather will be good or weather will be bad, historical data would suggest that you would have a better probability of enjoyable weather in August than in September.

Not sure what kind of scuba recommendations you are looking for. I know a bit about the island, I've averaged a little more than 2 trips per year there since the year 2000 (July will mark my 24th visit). If you have specific questions, feel free to contact me by email.

Good luck with your choice, and hopefully have a pleasant trip.
