Perhentian Besar Malaysia For Diving, Sun And Rainforests
It must be everyone's dream to have at least one holiday on a tropical island paradise before they die. It is certainly one of my goals, only I want to visit as many as possible. Perhentian Besar Malaysia is one of two islands situated on the South East of Malaysia with Besar being the larger of the islands.
If you are the paradise loving, snorkeling or scuba diving eco tourist type, this is one visit you have to make. The terrain of the island varies from palm-lined beaches to lush rainforest. While the coral reefs are spectacular for underwater exploring, the rainforests are just as spectacular for jungle trekking and inland exploring. Natural beauty abounds and it is breathtaking.
The Sea surrounding Perhentian Besar is the South China Sea and its nearby sister island is just a beautiful, only smaller, Perhentian Kecil! These are two of the most unusual and interesting holiday destinations in the world.
To reach your destination on the Island, you have to travel by boat from the mainland. This can be done the lazy tourist way or the speedy local way, but his is when the adventure really starts. The fast boat take a half hour while the slow boat takes approximately 1 and a ½ hours to travel the 20 miles from the mainland.
Both Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil offer many attractions to different types of tourist. Divers as well as non-divers enjoy their stay and many non-divers become divers her for the first time. These islands are the home to many dive schools and all of them hire out the necessary equipment.
Many tourists visit these island as a day trip, and many stop over, in fact in the Malaysian language, the word "perhentian" means "stop-over". Accommodations vary and are available for all budgets, so if you do decide to stop over, you will be comfortable.
The rainforests are pristine and may even be called "virgin". Adventuring through these into the interior is a popular activity, and many visitors just happen upon the local wildlife, while taking a hike. Flying Fox, Long-tailed Macaque and Monitor lizards can be found as well as other species.
Sunbathing, swimming and many other water sports may be enjoyed, it just depends on how active or inactive you want to be. The waters are very calm, and the diving is perfect. Both soft and hard corals form the reef and you also find many mollusks, sponges and small fish in the reefs. This is an enforced conservation area and one of the last known nesting areas of the Giant Leatherback Turtle.
The health coral reefs, attract large predators as the marine life in this area is so rice, by large predators we means larger fish, in the fish eat fish category and moray eel. Not man eating shark! The seascape itself is a breathtakingly beautiful as the landscape and dive sites are mostly accessed from the sea by boat.
Submerged reefs do experience some stronger current, but for the most parts currents in the good dive sites are manageable for any swimmer. Around the Marine Parks island, you will find that marker buoys show you where the best dive sites are to be found.
