Surf's up in stunning indonesia

The Wanderlust Travel Awards 2009 are out and it's official: Indonesia is one of the world's top holiday destinations. Indonesia's appeal lies in its cultural variety and exotic food and a holiday to Indonesia is a true melting-pot of an experience. You can go from one of the chicest bars on the planet in central Jakarta to a remote tropical island paradise in a matter of hours.  Bliss.

If you’re a surfer, you’re probably looking for the dream boarding hang-out. And in 2009 the largest swells so far have been seen off the coast of Bali in Indonesia. Recently, 10ft waves were crashing down at Outside Corner, and the swell in Bali peaked on Saturday September 11th with surfers riding mammoth 12ft waves. And let's not forget that the largest wave ever surfed hit Uluwatu 20 years ago, so Indonesia is surely due another record breaking swell. If you've been bitten by the surfing bug and are yet to take a holiday to Indonesia, you don't know what you're missing.

If you go to Indonesia regularly you will no may have come across Kretek. The 'medicinal' cigarettes, which are packed full of cloves, have been popular in the archipelago for more than a century.

The weird smoking sticks take their name from the crackling sound that the unique blend of spices makes when smoked. And the cigarettes are popular, with around 90 per cent of native Indonesian smokers enjoying them every single day (that's not a recommendation for trying them, these things are just as bad as regular cigarettes).

Anyway, what got me thinking about the humble Kretek cigarette was Depok Beach in Kretek (you see where I'm going with this). Depok Beach is a popular haunt for travellers in search of great angling; and for those who don't want to hang around there's one of the best fish markets in the country held here every day, definitely worth checking out.

So whether it’s vibrant night life, delicious cuisine, a tropical paradise, surfers heaven or fantastic fishing you want, be sure to make your way to Indonesia.  You won't regret it.
