Eilat: Israel's answer to the Riviera

One of the really nice things about Israel is that even though it's a tiny country, it also has a very diverse ecology. You could spend the morning skiing on the Golan heights and the evening watching the sun set on a beach in Eilat for example. However, in order to get the most from your vacation, you should rent a car in Israel.

Bus service is available in and between the major cities, however many of the great places to see are in out of the way places that you can't get to without a car rental. Israel's answer to the Riviera for example, Eilat does not even have bus service available anywhere in the town (there is a bus to get there, but frankly, the car ride is dramatically shorter and much more comfortable.).

Fortunately, if you want to rent a car in Israel, one of the best car rental agencies is available right in Eilat. Car Rental Israel (www.carrentalisrael.com) is the local Avis representative in Eilat and Israel. They offer the newest fleet in the country, the cheapest car rental rates and you can return your car elsewhere in the country (i.e. if you rent at Avis Eilat, you can then return the car at Avis Jerusalem). Car Rental Israel also has no cancellation fees and no credit car requirements.

Once you've rented your car from Car Rental Israel, you should definitely enjoy everything this one of a kind seaside resort has to offer. Eilat is a remarkable and peaceful place where the sun shines virtually all year round and it is far from the hustle and bustle of the center of the country. The first thing you should see in Eilat is the underwater marine observatory.

The observatory is really a marine park with a number of fascinating exhibits such as the Aquarium Museum, the Shark Tank, the Turtle and Stingray Pool and of course, the highlight of the experience, the Underwater Observatories and Reef Tanks. While you can see most of these things in your own country, the underwater observatories and reef tanks are quite unique to this town. You'll get to observe a living, breathing ocean reef, complete with corals, from under the water. It is a remarkable experience not to be missed.

Speaking of going underwater, for the more adventurous, there is also a submarine tour under water where you will spend about an hour seeing more of the amazing ecosystem in the Red Sea than you can see in the underwater observatories. Of course if you prefer to commune with nature, scuba diving is another option. Lessons are available for those who have never done it and you can rent a scuba suit as well.

Another place your car rental will take you in Israel is to the Red Canyon, just north of Eilat on Highway 12. The canyon was formed by the slow erosion caused by water cascading down the sides of the hills. Today, you can enjoy the immense beauty of the canyon and even slide down the side of the mountain, where the canyon has formed a natural slide.

You should also check out Timna National Park. The park is surrounded by yellow sandstone mountains on three sides and boasts ancient copper mines which can be explored at leisure. The height of the experience of course is the red volcanic Mt. Timna at the center of the park and the famous “Mushroom,” a giant rock outcropping which resembles a mushroom.

Later, drive back to Eilat and spend some time in Eilat's largest (and only) mall, Mall Hayam. The mall is open every day of the week and you can find tons of shopping, restaurants and other forms of entertainment here.

If you choose, after your visit to Eilat, you can continue on to either Taba in Egypt or Petra in Jordan as border crossings are available to both from the city. You can return your rental car on the Israel side of the border and then find accommodations in the other country. Upon your return, you can rent a car in Israel again and continue on your way.
