Tasty Holidays In Senigallia

A holiday in Senigallia does not only include the possibility to relax on the so-called "velvet beach", to dive into a crystal clear and clean sea or to walk in a picturesque historical centre: a holiday in Senigallia must include good food.

An evidence of the value of the traditional cuisine of Senigallia is given also by the fact that many restaurants of the city are included in the lists of the best Italian restaurants, and by the great success achieved by the dishes cooked by the chefs of the city, which are very appreciated both by Italian and foreign tourists. The gastronomic tradition of Senigallia can count on various factors that make it stand out in the panorama of Italian cuisine and make it successful: from a good hotel school, which trains the future chefs and restaurateurs in the right way, to the local, always fresh products (first of all, fish), which allow cooks to create many different dishes, both traditional and innovative, to meet everybody's desires. Also, the gastronomic offer of Senigallia ranges from taverns with an ancient flavour to nice, seaside, fish restaurants, from family restaurants to pizzerias.

If you visit Senigallia you cannot resist the temptation of tasting some typical dishes: many of them are fish dishes, of course, but you can find also meat dishes and mouth-watering cakes. Fish grills, mixed fried fish, "brodetto senigalliese" (a fish soup), but also roast goose, sausages, roast suckling pig cooked in a wooden oven, cheese pizza and cakes like the "ciambellone" (a ring-shaped cake) or the aniseed-flavoured doughnuts, and everything is accompanied by fine wines: you are already drooling, aren't you?

With such a gastronomic tradition, no wonder that the city of Senigallia organises various events to celebrate its products and cuisine. Bluefish is the protagonist of "Azzurro come il mare" (blue like the sea), a cooking workshop that has taken place for some years at the end of April and that makes its participants discover the bluefish peculiarities and learn the best cooking techniques to emphasize the taste of this extraordinary product. Famous teachers show to the participants that it is possible to create an impressive dish out of a seemingly poor ingredient like bluefish. Another well-known and appreciated gastronomic event is "Pane Nostrum", the bread festival that is usually held in September. This is a journey into the history of bread, one of the basic elements of Mediterranean and other cuisines, and the squares of the city are transformed into open air ovens. A good chance to learn to combine bread with various local products (there are several stands to visit), and to discover how bread was used in the past: every year an interesting historical re-enactment gives you an idea of what daily life was like in ancient times. Other interesting events are the feasts that are organised in smaller villages, like the fish feast in Cesano (May – June) and a feast in Sant'Angelo (August) where you can find tasty, traditional dishes, like gnocchi (dumplings) with duck sauce, noodles with meat sauce, beans with pork rind, mixed grills and mussels.
