Zakynthos, Greece - One Of Our Favourite Ionian Islands
Zakynthos, or Zante as it is often known in Britain, is one of the many islands off the coast of mainline Greece in the Mediterranean Sea. It has a thriving tourism industry, with many great value package deals available helping to make holidays to Zakynthos really accessible.
The climate in Zakynthos is a big draw for many - wonderful long, sunny days throughout the summer months and low rainfall provide a welcome contrast to the wet British summer. In fact the island is one of the sunniest places in Greece. Temperatures average at about 32°C in July and August. The winter months provide high rainfall which helps create an abundance of lush vegetation and scenery on the island.
Needless to say, there are an abundance of lovely beaches on the island. One of the most pretty is Navagio (or Shipwreck) bay, on the eastern side of the island. Only accessible by boat, the beach is nestled within steep white cliff and its unique nature has led to it being one of the most photographed beaches in Greece.
The beaches here are also prime locations for a spot of Scuba diving. Zakynthos has many impressive rock formations above sea level, this geology gives rise to a number of underwater caves which make for very interesting dives. There is also plenty of sea life to keep divers entertained. If you're lucky you might spot a rare loggerhead turtle, which are now protected on the islands breeding ground beaches.
Aside from the coastline, Zakynthos has plenty of culture and history. Much of the capital city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953 however there is an interesting mix of traditional and modern buildings. The area near Solomos Square is popular with tourists, with a great mix of restaurants and shops. If you are planning your holidays to Greece, Zakynthos has a great mix of qualities that help make it a really attractive place to visit.
