Cozumel is the first place that comes to my mind. It's a small island, 280 square miles, just east of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. You won't see any tall buildings or interstate highways there. But you will notice lots of mopeds.

The water off the west coast is extremely calm because the island is protected by a series of reefs. Conversely, the east side, which faces the ocean, gets hit by strong winds and rough surf, making swimming unsafe. Consequently, all hotels and resorts are on the island's west side.
San Miguel, on the west coast, is Cozumel's only town, and unremarkable would be an apt descriptor. While San Miguel is pretty much pedestrian, the locale does have numerous restaurants and shops. If you arrive by ferry from the mainland, be prepared for the onslaught of salespeople from various dive and snorkel operations.
Aside from being a perfect place to kick back and relax, Cozumel has a couple of other attributes. The island is a popular port-of-call for cruise lines. As a result, side-by-side jewelry stores, duty-free shops and souvenir stands have sprung up by San Miguel's waterfront. Most cruise passengers linger there while some venture as far as the main square.
Cozumel, in addition to being a refuge from stress, is considered the #1 dive destination in the Western Hemisphere. The reefs off the western coast are of course the reason for this. The southwestern edge offers the island's best diving since its reefs are extra tall. Cozumel accommodates non-divers also with other water sports and seaside activities. The catalyst for Cozumel's popularity as a dive haven was explorer Jacques Cousteau, who declared the shoreline to be "one of the most incredible diving destinations in the world."
Cozumel away from San Miguel and the resorts is also worth seeing. Local travel agencies arrange island tours and ruins tours. They also organize boat trips on the beautiful waters of the Caribbean.
