Bonaire Diving: The Best In The World
Bonaire diving is rivaled by no other in the world. As a testament to this, Bonaire has been the recipient of several awards for being the top diving destination in the world, and it continues to hold these titles today. That first plunge into the island's dive sites will give you an idea of how this came to be.
The Reef Environmental Education Foundation (a.k.a. R.E.E.F) lists eight out of almost 90 of Bonaire's dive sites in their top 10 in terms of species richness in the Caribbean, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as the "Fish Capital of the Caribbean." Among other marine life, Bonaire's fish species has been counted at 371, and this figure is rising, thus ensuring that any dive will be a fruitful one. Several of these species are found only in the island's waters.
However, it's not just the marine life itself that draws so many to the Bonaire diving. The island's waters are warm and calm. The year-round warmth of the water is due to the close proximity of the ABC islands, (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) to the equator. Because most of the dive sites in Bonaire are located on a part of the island where they are protected from strong wind and waves, the water is most often calm.
The island is able to maintain this environment and receive awards for Bonaire diving year after year because the surrounding waters of the island have been protected as the Bonaire National Marine Park for over 30 years.
